Right-of-Way (Give Way) Rules

At a GIVE WAY sign:

Slow down and give way to ALL vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

At a STOP sign:

Come to a complete stop. Only move when safe. Give way to all traffic.

Entering a roundabout:

Give way to all vehicles already in the roundabout. Indicate when exiting.

Turning right:

Give way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians crossing the road you're entering.

Turning left:

Give way to pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road you're turning into.

Merging lanes:

The vehicle that is merging must give way to vehicles in the lane it is merging into.

T-intersection (no sign):

Vehicles on the terminating road must give way to those on the continuing road.

Entering from private property:

Give way to ALL vehicles on the road when exiting driveways or car parks.

Ambulance / Police lights:

Pull over safely to the left and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.

Pedestrians at crossings:

Give way to pedestrians at marked crossings and before turning across a footpath.

Alcohol, Drugs & Driving

BAC Limits
  • 0.00% BAC: Learner & P1/P2 licence holders
  • 0.02% BAC: Heavy vehicle drivers (trucks, buses)
  • 0.05% BAC: Fully licensed private vehicle drivers
  • Even 1–2 standard drinks can raise BAC above 0.05%
  • Alcohol affects judgement, reaction time, and vision
Drug Driving
  • Police conduct roadside drug tests (saliva swabs)
  • Detectable substances include THC (cannabis), methamphetamine (speed/ice), and MDMA (ecstasy)
  • Zero tolerance applies — any presence is illegal
  • Prescription drugs can also impair driving
  • Always ask your doctor or pharmacist if your medication affects your ability to drive

Fatigue Management

Fatigue is a killer on Australian roads. Driver fatigue causes about 20–30% of serious crashes, especially on long country roads.
Stop and rest for at least 15–20 minutes every 2 hours on long trips.
Do not drive if you feel drowsy — pull over safely and rest.
Avoid driving between midnight and 6am — your body's natural sleep time.
Share the driving on long trips wherever possible.
Do not rely on caffeine or music alone to stay alert.
Signs of fatigue: yawning, heavy eyelids, drifting in lane, slowed reactions.
