Right-of-Way (Give Way) Rules
Slow down and give way to ALL vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Come to a complete stop. Only move when safe. Give way to all traffic.
Give way to all vehicles already in the roundabout. Indicate when exiting.
Give way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians crossing the road you're entering.
Give way to pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road you're turning into.
The vehicle that is merging must give way to vehicles in the lane it is merging into.
Vehicles on the terminating road must give way to those on the continuing road.
Give way to ALL vehicles on the road when exiting driveways or car parks.
Pull over safely to the left and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.
Give way to pedestrians at marked crossings and before turning across a footpath.
Alcohol, Drugs & Driving
BAC Limits
- 0.00% BAC: Learner & P1/P2 licence holders
- 0.02% BAC: Heavy vehicle drivers (trucks, buses)
- 0.05% BAC: Fully licensed private vehicle drivers
- Even 1–2 standard drinks can raise BAC above 0.05%
- Alcohol affects judgement, reaction time, and vision
Drug Driving
- Police conduct roadside drug tests (saliva swabs)
- Detectable substances include THC (cannabis), methamphetamine (speed/ice), and MDMA (ecstasy)
- Zero tolerance applies — any presence is illegal
- Prescription drugs can also impair driving
- Always ask your doctor or pharmacist if your medication affects your ability to drive
