About the Tasmania Driver Knowledge Test

The Tasmania Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) is a computer-based, multiple-choice test administered by Service Tasmania. You must pass the DKT before you are issued your Tasmania Learner Licence (L plates).

Tasmania DKT – Frequently Asked Questions

To get your Tasmanian learner licence: 1) Be at least 16 years old. 2) Pass the Driver Knowledge Test at a Service Tasmania centre. 3) Pass an eyesight test. 4) Provide acceptable ID. 5) Pay the fee. You must hold your learner licence for at least 12 months.

To pass the Tasmanian Driver Knowledge Test, you must correctly answer at least 20 out of 25 questions (80%).

Tasmanian learner drivers under 25 must complete at least 80 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours of night driving. Hours must be recorded in the official learner logbook.

Visitors to Tasmania can drive using a valid overseas licence for up to 3 months (and an international driving permit if the licence is not in English). After 3 months, you must obtain a Tasmanian licence.
