About the New South Wales Driver Knowledge Test

The New South Wales Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) is a computer-based, multiple-choice test administered by Transport for NSW. You must pass the DKT before you are issued your New South Wales Learner Licence (L plates).

New South Wales DKT – Frequently Asked Questions

You can book the NSW DKT online at the Service NSW website (service.nsw.gov.au), by calling 13 77 88, or by visiting any Service NSW centre. Booking online is the fastest and most convenient option.

To pass the NSW DKT, you must correctly answer at least 80% of questions — that is 36 out of 45 questions. The test covers road rules, road signs, and safe driving behaviour.

The NSW Driver Knowledge Test fee is approximately $28 (subject to change). Check the current fee on the Service NSW website before booking. AusDriving.com practice tests are always free.

You must be at least 16 years old to sit the NSW DKT and apply for a Learner Licence. You will need to pass an eyesight test in addition to the knowledge test.

The NSW DKT is available in over 35 languages at Service NSW centres. You can select your preferred language when booking. A translator is not permitted in the exam room.
